25억짜리 스팸메일 (인터넷 사기성 메일 주의보!)

메일 확인을 할 때 내게 오는 것이다라는 확신이 없으면 대부분 열어보지도 않고 삭제한다. 그런데 잘 쓰지 않는 메일주소로 1통의 메일이 들어온 것을 발견하고 지우려는 순간 뭔가 그럴듯한 이름이 보며 내용을 열어보았다.

 

내용은 영국인터넷복권 추첨에서 내 메일 주소가 당첨되어 250만불을 받게되었으니 에이전트와 연락을 하라는 것이었다. 엉터리라 생각하면서도 읽어보니 내용이 하도 그럴 듯 해서 정말 연락을 해볼까 하는 생각에 남편에게 이야기하였더니 단 한마디로 일축해버리는 것이었다.

 

그래서 인터넷 상으로 메일에 써져 있는 기관들의 이름을 검색해보았다. 결과는 내가 받은 메일과 금액, 에이전트 주소, 전화번호만 다른 똑같은 내용의 메일이 구글에 떠 있는 것이었다. 이상하다 싶어 더 검색했더니만 사기성 메일에 피해를 입은 사람은 연락을 해달라는 공고문이 뜨는 것이었다.

 

그러면 그렇지 싶었다. 잠시 잠깐 웬 25억 횡재가 내게?

 

사실이 확인되면서 5년 전 겪었던 일이 생각났다. 근무했던 기관장 앞으로 메일이 왔는데 아프리카 어느 나라의 재력가가 자신의 막대한 재산을 국제적인 구호사업에 쓰려고 하는데 그 일을 맡아줄 사람을 물색했단다. 그 대상으로 기관장을 찾았고 맡기겠으니 자기네 나라로 와달라는 이야기였다.

 

이상하다는 생각을 하면서도 메일에 있던 사람에 대해 한국주재 그 나라 대사관과 아프리카 주재 한국대사관에 연락을 해보았다. 결과는 그런 사기성 메일이 많으니 주의하라는 것이었고 한바탕 해프닝으로 끝났었다.

 

그런 일을 이미 겪고도 메일을 보고 잠시나마 혹시? 했던 어리석음이란....주의할 일이다.
